Runtheberg 2016
Official Race Report

There is something incredibly therapeutic about the Drakensberg (to the local Zulus, uKhahlamba, or Maluti in SeSotho), probably because of its unrivalled magnitude compared to any other mountain range in South Africa.

The Drakensberg! Africa’s premier mountain range, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Geographical Wonder, international tourist attraction and South Africa’s prime outdoor adventure camping and hiking destination rolled into one. Stretching uninterrupted from the Western Cape to the Limpopo, these magical mountains have drawn brave minds, restless souls and hardy bodies in search of exercise, beauty and adventure for generations. Now it is time to raise the stakes, take off the gloves, shake off the fear and put on those trail shoes, as we bring one of the world’s newest and fastest growing adventure sports to one of the world’s most ancient and extreme environments with Runtheberg’s brand new Drakensberg Adventure Trails!

The Northern Berg, the heart of the country between the Highveld and the Indian Ocean, easily accessible to city-dwelling Gautengers starved for fresh air and outdoor adventure, beach-loving KZN-ers looking for some real elevation, and Free State farmers wanting to show off their toughness, is the perfect destination for staging what is fast becoming South Africa’s top 2-day, 2-stage trail running weekend. The format for the weekend will include 2 races – the intermediate Challenge Race at +-15km per day, and the tougher Extreme Race at +-25km per day.

Entry Fees 2019

  • Runtheberg Challenge – R1550
  • Runtheberg Extreme – R1875

The Best of Both Worlds

In addition, recognising the amount of time those of us who love chasing our outdoor passions spend alone away from our families and loved-ones in beautiful but remote and inaccessible locations, the Northern Berg offers participants an unrivalled opportunity to include their greatest supporters. Nestling in the shadow of the Amphitheatre is a range of world-class accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, where runners can relax in comfort recuperating between stages, and friends, families and children can take advantage of the wide range of activities especially on offer and be exposed to the true wonder that is our Drakensberg.

  1. I see both of you guys Errol & Lebs are in 🙂 Sorry about the admin hiccups this morning! See you in the Berg!

  2. Hi Emiel, we have a limit on Total entrants across the two races, however we reserve the right to close entries to either race separately should we decide that it is getting too full. Hope this helps. Warren

  3. Hi Warren,
What does the race entry include…specifically in terms of meals?
Is this provided or do we cater for ourselves?
If meals are provided is there an option to get meals for our supporters?

  4. Hi Tammy thx for the query. Race entry includes a gourmet boerewors roll from local legend The Phatt Chef (or veg equivalent) both days post-race. These are also available for purchase at the race village for spectators (or if you’re really hungry and want more than one 🙂 ). Other meals will be provided by your accommodation, depending on how and where you stay, or by yourself if self-catering / camping.
Any other queries just give us a shout.

  5. Hey Lisa,
Thanks for your inquiry. To enter just follow the ENTER NOW link on the left hand side of the Home page here on the website, and follow the process all the way through to payment. Give us a shout if you have any problems.

  6. Hi Warren,

Is it relatively easy to organise a lift from KZN to the northern Drakensberg area via your social media platforms. I am very keen to enter the race but will do so solo traveling from Cpt via plane.

    1. Naz, Closer to the time Naz you can communicate , we should be willing . We driving from dbn as well.

  7. Howzit Naz, yes it should be. I have a friend who did exactly that last year. Obviously can’t guarantee but a big chunk of the field comes from the DBN area and I’m sure we’ll be able to help you sort something out closer to the time. All that being said, the Northern Berg is pretty much in between JHB & DBN, and I’m sure the flight situation between JHB & CT is way better? AND an equally big chunk of the field comes from Gauteng 🙂
    Hope that helps.

  8. Hi Warren,

Is there a process for substitutions? Two people in our group of five can no longer go 🙁

  9. Hey Chantelle,
Yep some entries still available. I’ve just tested and all seems OK on our side and the entry system. Give me a shout if you keep having problems.

  10. Hey Renate, just click on the red ENTER NOW button on the left of the Home Page here and follow the link all the way through to payment. If you have any difficulties just give us a shout. Regards,
